OXYGEN-OZONE THERAPY
Medicine today is able to exploit ozone for its oxidizing power: this characteristic, methodically modulated, triggers a functional response from the organism, so much so that it finds numerous applications in today's medicine.

What is oxygen-ozone therapy
Oxygen-ozone therapy is a treatment that uses medicalized ozone to increase tissue oxygenation, regulate oxidation-reduction and mitigate inflammatory states. The ozone molecule has a highly oxidizing power which, managed reasonably, causes moderate and controlled oxidative stress on the tissues, capable of eliciting an antioxidant response. This response activates enzymes that protect cells and reverse the oxidative process generated in the first instance, transforming it advantageously. Oxygen-ozone therapy has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic and antifungal function, as it neutralizes the action of bacteria by weakening their protective envelope, of viruses by compromising the viral capsid, and of fungi and parasites by inhibiting their cell growth thanks to the work of oxidation.
The safe quantity of ozone has been extensively studied in recent decades to ensure a harmless and effective use of the molecule, regulated by a maximum quantity of gas per milliliter of blood, so that the reaction generated is controlled and non-toxic.
How oxygen-ozone therapy is administered
The route of administration of the oxygen and ozone mixture are different and vary according to the patient's needs. They can be both topical or parenteral.
Oxygen-ozone therapy can take place with systemic administration through intravenous infusions (major or minor, based on the quantity of blood taken), where the gasses are mixed with the blood to be then immediately reinfiltrated into the patient to allow maxi oxygenation of the tissues. The circuit is closed and sterile.
There is also the possibility of local infiltration of oxygen-ozone, which can be intramuscular, paravertebral or intra-articular. This method is used especially in the treatment of orthopedic, traumatological and psychiatric pathologies.
In case of local inflammation, procedures such as vaginal, rectal, anal, urethral and nasal insufflations are preferred, administered via tubes or small catheters.
Finally, to respond to circulatory problems, oxygen-ozone therapy can be performed through transcutaneous gas baths. The area to be treated is sprayed with ozone contained in a closed bag, which is filled and then emptied with a special machine so that the contents are not dispersed into the environment.
There’s no need to be concerned about the pain: ozone therapy does not hurt, the maximum discomfort experienced is that of the passage of the needle.
What is oxygen-ozone therapy used for: treatment areas
How useful oxygen-ozone therapy is? To answer the question, it’s important to mention the many uses of the treatment.
For some time now, the technique has been used in the treatment of acute and chronic inflammation (tendinitis, arthritis, arthrosis, fibromyalgia, headaches and migraines) and spinal pathologies (hernias, lumbosciatica).
The oxygenation of the tissues stimulated by the therapy has lots of benefits on blood circulation, so oxygen-ozone therapy is used in the treatment of pathologies such as peripheral and cerebral arterial disease and leg ulcers.
Viral diseases, bacterial infections and mycoses are favorably affected by the treatment.
Oxygen-ozone therapy is also used in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of cellulite, skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis and for anti-aging purposes.
Oxygen-ozone therapy sessions
The number of sessions necessary for an effective treatment varies based on the disorder, the administration technique, the patient's starting conditions and his age. The route of administration also affects the duration of the oxygen-ozone therapy session which, in general, does not exceed 15/20 minutes. In order for the therapy to start working, it is necessary at least 5 sessions set at close distance. The frequency is then reduced together with a revision of the administered dose.
Costs and refund options of oxygen-ozone therapy
It is impossible to give an answer regarding the costs of oxygen-ozone therapy, because it depends on many variables such as the technique used and the number of sessions necessary. To give a generic answer, the average cost per session of oxygen-ozone therapy ranges from 70 to 150 Euros depending on the type of treatment.
However, it is useful to know what can be prescribed on the National Health Service. In Italy, at the moment, the only region that provides loanable ozone therapy is Lombardy, which includes some ozone treatments - in particular those relating to the hospital treatment of herniated discs - in the medical offer which provides only ticket payment. In all other cases, it is useful to remember that oxygen-ozone therapy used as a medical practice can be discharged in the tax return like all healthcare expenses.
Contraindications and side effects of oxygen-ozone therapy
The side effects of oxygen-ozone therapy are related, in most cases, to negligence. For this reason it’s essential to follow the directions of a specialist doctor, capable of evaluating the most suitable doses and procedures. In the doses established by international guidelines, oxygen-ozone therapy is safe and effective.
There are, however, cases that require caution. In case of pregnancy, favism, hemolytic anemia, hyperthyroidism, severe coagulation problems and serious cardiovascular diseases, oxygen-ozone therapy is not recommended.

OXYGEN THERAPY IN MENOPAUSE: BREATHING NEW LIFE
Menopause is a particularly delicate moment for women as it marks the entry into a new phase of life. The disorders that came from it must be treated starting from the research of a general well-being, to support the body through the changes that it will have to face. Oxygen therapy acts as a cellular reinvigoration which can alleviate some of the typical symptoms of menopause while simultaneously providing energy to the entire organism.
OXYGEN-OZONE THERAPY FOR NECK PAIN
Neck pain related to the cervical area is very common, attributable to trauma, arthritis or hernias. The solution is not always easy. Although sporadic discomfort can be managed with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, oxygen-ozone therapy has proven to be particularly effective for the treatment of chronic pain.
OXYGEN-OZONE THERAPY FOR BACK PAIN
Back pain, especially related to the lumbar area, is one of the most common disorders, often - but not always - caused by pathologies affecting the spine. Oxygen-ozone therapy has proven to be very useful in the treatment of lumbago and back pain, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving ability.
